Montana Bear Hunting

We offer both spring and fall black bear hunts. Our bear hunts take place from our backcountry camp located about 6 miles in from the trailhead. We access this camp by horses and mules, which is about a 2-hour ride into camp. The state of Montana does not allow the use of dogs or bait while hunting bears. The spot and stalk method is how we hunt bears here. This method can be very exciting, challenging and successful to the hunter that doesn't want to sit in a tree stand over a bait site, or chase a bunch of dogs all over the country.

In the spring we glass the southern slopes and grassy areas looking for bears as they merge from their winter dens and head for the southern slopes to feed on the new green grass. Once a suitable bear has been spotted we will then stalk into within shooting range. In the fall we basically use the same method although we will hunt the high basins and large berry batches as the bears start stalking up their fat reserves before they start their winter hibernation. Due to the states season dates, hunting regulations and habitat our area offers an excellent bear population. Both mature bears and color-phased bears can be taken on these hunts.
